A 14th century painting of the Madonna and Child with God the Father and two angels is currently in the expert hands of restorers

The Italian work was donated to the Sisters as a legacy. Sadly, the painting has seen better days and was not helped by a poor quality Victorian restoration.

Art conservator Ruth Bubb, now has the painting under her wing. The painstaking process of undoing the ravages of time and the botched Victorian restoration is well under way at her Oxfordshire workshop.

“The cleaning of the painting is complete,” says Ruth. “We moving on to consolidating fragile areas in the original pictorial layers. The next task is to fill the losses before we complete the restoration by retouching.”

The Sisters are looking forward to the Madonna’s return later in the year and hanging it where many can appreciate its restored beauty.
